WAYNE Parnell and Tom Fell hit half-centuries as Worcestershire made a late-order recovery but went down by 34 runs in a Royal London One-Day Cup derby with Warwickshire at Blackfinch New Road.

The County, who had won three of their opening four games, had been given a fine start by Hamish Rutherford (42) and Riki Wessels (37) via a stand of 86 in 13 overs in pursuit of a 316 target.

But then a series of wickets went down in quick succession to leave the score on 145-7.

Fell and Parnell added 64 for the eighth wicket with the former hitting a composed first half-century of the campaign off 63 balls with six fours.

The stand was broken when Fell (53) was adjudged to have been run out, rather than stumped, by keeper Alex Mellor from a delivery by Warwickshire skipper Jeetan Patel.

But Parnell, who showed plenty of aggressive intent from the start of his innings, and Josh Tongue provided further resistance in a partnership of 52 in six overs.

Parnell went to his half-century off 40 balls with three fours and two sixes and Tongue raced to 34 off 21 balls before he fell at long-on off Alex Thomson.

There was more hitting to come from Parnell who hoisted Oliver Hannon-Dalby for successive sixes.

But the innings finally ended at 281 after 47.2 overs when Parnell skied a catch to deep mid-wicket off Henry Brookes.

His knock of 76 from 57 deliveries included four sixes and four fours.

Despite the setback, Worcestershire are still well in contention to qualify for the knockout stages with six points from the first five games.

Sam Hain achieved his highest List A score of 161 not out as Warwickshire totalled 315-5 in 50 overs after electing to bat.

Tongue and Charlie Morris both picked up an early wicket for Rapids.

Ed Pollock (13) upper cut Tongue into the hands of Morris on the third-man boundary with 17 on the board.

Six runs later Dominic Sibley (5) clipped Morris into the mid-wicket region and Fell held onto the chance away to his right.

It became 62-3 when Will Rhodes (20) nicked Parnell and keeper Ben Cox produced a magnificent one-handed catch away to his left.

Hain, who survived one chance on 90, dominated the remainder of the innings and shared in partnerships of 99 with Liam Banks (44) and 103 with Alex Thomson (33).

Morris returned to the attack to have Banks caught behind and Thomson departed at cover to provide Parnell with a second breakthrough.

When Worcestershire batted, Patel made the first breakthrough by bowling Wessels and then Rutherford, in his final appearance with the County, gloved a delivery from Thomason and was caught behind by Alex Mellor.

Mitchell (2) was run out by Hain’s direct hit running in from point attempting a quick single off Thomason and then Patel struck in successive overs.

D’Oliveira (1) was yorked and Cox (0) fell at square leg.

Ross Whiteley (13) picked out mid-on off Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Ed Barnard (6) nicked the same bowler through to Mellor.
