Shrewsbury School recently hosted its 8th annual Model United Nations conference, ShrewsMUN VIII, marking a significant event in the academic calendar for students across the West Midlands and Manchester. This year’s theme, ‘Peace and Conflict’, resonated through the halls as over 100 delegates engaged in spirited debates and resolutions.
The conference featured seven committees, each focusing on critical global issues. The Youth Committee delved into the challenges facing the younger generation, while the Justice Committee tackled complex legal matters. The Security Committee discussed international safety, and the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECCOM) explored political autonomy and self-governance. The Economic and Financial Committee (ECOFIN) examined global economic trends, the Health Committee addressed pressing public health concerns, and the Human Rights Committee stood as a beacon for global justice and equality.
Manchester Grammar School won the Best Delegation award, with commendable performances from Withington Girls’ School and Cheadle Hulme School. The event not only provided a platform for intellectual discourse but also fostered networking among like-minded students, with many forming lasting connections.
Co-Secretary Generals, Scarlet S and Liam G, expressed their delight and excitement at the success of the event, which has become a transformative experience for participants, empowering them to become informed global citizens. The conference’s success is a testament to the dedication of the students and the school’s commitment to nurturing future leaders capable of shaping a better world.
