Tom Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson has revealed how cancer has given them a special bond.
The actress, who revealed her diagnosis with breast cancer in April, has returned to her Broadway show after a month’s hiatus, when she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.
She told the New York Times that the experience has brought her and Tom together, saying: “Who knew it would make you even closer?”
The Oscar-winning star of films such as Forrest Gump, Captain Phillips and Saving Mr Banks and Rita have been married for 27 years.
She continued: “You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this. I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me. It was such a normal, intimate time.”
The 58-year-old actress said she has been “astounded and touched” by the support she has received from friends, including Larry David, her co-star in Broadway play Fish In The Dark.
“You don’t think of Larry David as a person who would be this way, but he’s incredibly empathetic,” she said.
“He went, ‘Oh God, Oh God, Oh God,’ (when I told him). He practically went white. I told him, Larry, I’m going to be absolutely fine. To be exposed to this amount of goodness, I’m just incredibly grateful.”
