DUDLEY councillors are urged to get on their marks and support a £1m bid to hold the borough's very own Olympics spectacular to coincide with the 2008 games in Beijing.

Sporting superstars may get to showcase their skills thanks to the initiative of councillor Karen Jordan who came up with the impressive scheme.

The Brockmoor and Pensnett councillor is now hoping councillors from all three political parties will get the 2008 Dudley Community Olympics scheme off the starting blocks.

The triumphant councillor said the sky is the limit' and is hopeful even more funding could be sought to help boost the borough's facilities.

She said: "I have been thinking about an Olympics for Dudley since the London Olympics were announced.

"Why not put Dudley on the sporting map - just imagine what £1m would do.

"We might even be able to fund Olympic hopefuls and help to sponsor them to success."

The sensational scheme has already won the backing from Tory councillor Charles Fraser-Macnamara as well as Lib Dem councillor Lynn Boleyn.

Cabinet member for culture and leisure cllr Fraser-Macnamara said: "I am completely behind this excellent idea and am sure it will not only receive support from all parties but also be welcomed by the people we represent."

The outline plan is to hold sports events in parks and schools around the borough including the Dell Stadium, using Himley Hall for water sports, triathlons, cross country racing and archery.

In addition borough leisure centres and town halls would also provide venues for sports like judo, gymnastics and indoor racquet sports.

A paper was set to be presented to last night's cabinet meeting as part of Dudley's Cultural Strategy asking for all party support.

An application for £40,000 funding has been made to Dudley Children's Play Initiative and Cllr Jordan is confident money could be raised through a variety of other funding bodies.
