I first experienced Cats: The Musical as a child and remember being totally mesmerised from start to finish.

Twenty years on, sitting in Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, I was still engulfed in that same magic that captured me as a little girl.

It probably helps that I’m head over heels about the feline variety, so continued to be in awe at the lifelike cat mimicry and graceful movements from the cast.

The story itself is quite simple; with hardly any dialogue the tale is based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot and is told through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous score, which includes hits including Memory, Mr. Mistoffelees, Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat, The Rum Tum Tugger and Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats.

The show tells the tale of a group of Jellicle cats who meet in a scrapyard in the dead of night for their annual Jellicle ball. Individually introduced with a song, they wait for their wise leader Old Deuteronomy to choose which cat will go to the heaviside layer and be reborn to a new Jellicle life.

The entire cast were outstanding and left me feeling worn out just watching them from my seat with their superb and energetic dance routines.

From the colourful costumes and make-up to the fabulous scrapyard set and special effects the show can only be summed up as “purrrrfect” (sorry couldn’t resist!)

Humming the show tunes all the way home I was greeted my own gumbie cats waiting for me on the stairs, who got an extra tickle behind their ears that night!
