A KIND-HEARTED Stourbridge woman has handed over £725 to help borough cancer sufferers after asking friends and family for charity cash instead of gifts for her 70th birthday.

Gloria Donovan presented the money to the Georgina Ward at Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, yesterday (Thursday September 26) and it will help to buy a new recliner chair for the ward - the borough’s main cancer and leukaemia centre.

It’s not the first time Gloria, a stalwart of Quarry Bank Royal British Legion, has selflessly opted for charity donations instead of presents.

She did it for her 67th birthday and also held a raffle - raising £1,100 for the Georgina Ward.

She said: “I’m 70 - what do you want at 70?

“I just want to help people who’ve got cancer and are being treated at the Georgina Ward.”

The hospital’s charity fundraising manager Karen Phillips said the Dudley Group NHS Charity depends on “the kindness of people such as Mrs Donovan” and she added: “Donations make an enormous difference to our patients, and their families, at such a dreadful time.”
