PREP school students from across the region descended on Old Swinford Hospital School in Stourbridge for a day of science, music, drama and sporting challenges.

More than 80 youngsters aged nine to 11 from Quainton Hall School in Harrow, Ruckleigh School in Solihull, the Knoll School in Kidderminster, Vernon Lodge in Stretton and Birchfield in Albrighton were invited to the annual schools' summer festival, hosted by the Heath Lane school on June 12.

Pupils specialising in science spent the day looking at chemical reactions, mini-beasts, fungus and their own cells as well as bridge building and taking part in a wind turbine challenge.

While musically-minded youngsters spent time composing on keyboards and computers before joining sixth form students to put on a performance at the end of the day.

Drama pupils, meanwhile, improvised and devised scenes before staging two small group performances; and young sporting stars competed in a mini-Olympics tournament and rounders competition.

Headteacher Peter Jones said “On a delightful summer’s day it was wonderful to see all the pupils working so well together, getting involved and enjoying taking part in all the different activities which were both challenging and enjoyable in equal measure."

For the second year running, children from the Knoll School walked away with the prestigious Science Challenge Cup for their winning performance.
