A QUARRY Bank poppy collector will take centre stage at Sainsbury's Merry Hill as the retailer marks its 20th year supporting The Royal British Legion.

Vilma Griffin, aged 79, has sold poppies in store for the last12 years, alongside her husband Denis, aged 89.

The couple will be drumming up more support in the run up to Armistice Day on November 11.

Reflecting on her experience, Mrs Griffin said: “I have been a member and supporter of The Royal British Legion for over 55 years now and my husband and I have volunteered for the Poppy Appeal in local Sainsbury’s stores for the past 12 years.

"People often praise us for our work, but we feel it is our duty and honour to support the soldiers and forces fighting for us.

“When my husband wears his uniform, displaying his medals, for the collecting period, it is incredibly warming to see how many people approach him to ask what he was awarded for and also to share their own experiences.”

Shoppers can show their support for those affected by conflict by donating to poppy collectors such as the Griffins, buying exclusive in-store merchandise, rounding up their shopping bill at the till or making a £1 donation through online shopping.

Customers will also be able to recycle their poppies in store from November 12.

Andrew Broadsmore, store manager for Sainsbury’s Merry Hill, added: “We really enjoy welcoming the Griffins and fellow volunteers into store for the Poppy Appeal.

"This year marks the WW1 centenary, and also our 20th anniversary supporting The Royal British Legion, so we’re delighted to offer our customers more ways than ever to show their support.”
