NEW research shows that smokers are 70 per cent more at risk of anxiety and depression than non-smokers.

Research released by the British Heart Foundation in advance of No Smoking Day on Wednesday (March 11) has revealed that although smokers have an increased risk of anxiety and depression, by giving up the habit they are likely to be no different to those of non-smokers.

In light of this, smokers across the borough are being encouraged by Dudley’s Stop Smoking Service to recognise that lighting up isn’t necessarily the stress reliever it’s perceived to be.

This statistic suggests that by quitting smoking people can combat anxiety and depression and improve their overall mental health.

Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health, said: “Stopping smoking can be a real challenge. However, our local stop smoking service gives smokers all the support they need when they are ready to quit.

“It’s staffed with experts who help smokers understand why they smoke and then create a plan to help them go smokefree.

"In fact one in two people who quit with the Dudley Stop Smoking Service aren’t smoking four weeks later.”

The Dudley Stop Smoking Service offers a combination of friendly expert advice, behavioural support and access on prescription to treatments such as Champix or nicotine patches or gum.

The service has specialist advisors based throughout the borough offering one-to-one support in local pharmacies and GP surgeries and group support at four dedicated stop smoking groups.
