A Halesowen couple who met at a bus stop during a bus strike have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Diane and Joseph Moore of Green Lane, met when Joseph, who was standing at the bus stop at the bottom of Mucklow Hill, asked Diane, who was walking past, if the buses were running.

Diane said: "I told him and his friend that only the number nine bus was running because of the strike.

"We walked up the hill together and I directed him to the number nine bus stop."

Joseph, who was on leave from the army at the time, asked if he could write to Diane and if she thought her mother would mind him writing to her!

They continued to swap letters when Joseph returned to the forces and got engaged when he came out of the army in 1955.

The couple married at Stourbridge Registry Office on and went on honeymoon to Paignton, Devon. The happy couple are celebrating the milestone by going on holiday to Torquay to revisit the area where they spent their honeymoon 50 years ago.

They were also presented with an anniversary cake by their four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren at the wedding reception of their eldest son who got married on February 25.

Diane said: "It was a real surprise.

"They had all put together to buy the cake.

"The wedding cake was gorgeous so I'm looking forward to tasting ours.

"We are going to cut it when my son gets back off his honeymoon."

Diane, now 68 and Joseph, now 72, agree the secret to a happy marriage is to be good and kind to each other and if there are any quarrels to make up sooner rather than later.
