THE Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne might be in danger of piling on the pounds after he cleared out a Wordsley's cafe's stock of fresh cakes whilst on the campaign trail.

Mr Osborne, who won his own battle of the bulge by losing over two stone in a year, helped decorate a Conservative cake at the Glass Cone cafe at the Red House Glass Cone.

The svelte politician visited the town on Tuesday to back Stourbridge and Dudley South candidates Margot James and Mike Wood.

He said: "On the campaign trail you either have good or bad food days and this is certainly a good one."

Staff were surprised when instead of buying a slice of cake he bought three entire cakes including a chocolate sponge and Victoria sponge.

Owner of the cafe Sharon Henderson said: "He seemed to enjoy himself decorating the cake and then before he left he bought the whole lot."

Mr Osborne was in town to press home the economic benefits of a Conservative led Government.

"I can help make it easier for small businesses with cutting business rates and making it easier for the town to be a success.

"I came here in 2010 and the situation was awful the town facing mass unemployment and things are better because of our policies and I hope people remember that on polling day."

He added: "These seats in the Black Country very important for the General Election, people who are voting need to remember what has happened in the last five years.

Mr Osborne was also presented with a special Conservative clock by Stuart Caldicott from Stuart’s Clocks and Gifts.

Pedmore councillor Mike Wood, who is fighting to replace outgoing Chris Kelly, as the MP for Dudley South said: "It was great to have the support of the Chancellor here in the Dudley South constituency.

"The campaign is going well and I am meeting lots of people who are saying they voted UKIP in the last council elections but who feel this election matters so hopefully they will come back to their natural home and vote Conservative."

Margot James added: "It is wonderful to have the Chancellor back in the town as we are a success story with 2000 new businesses being launched here since 2010.

"I am getting a good response on the door steps and though it is a bit tighter than the last election I am still very confident of winning."
