Two ambulance staff members with very personal motivations are set to take on the challenge of cycling from John O'Groats to Land's End for charity.

Kallum Pemberton, 26, from Stourbridge, and Jessica Young, 22, both front line workers at the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS), are dedicating their efforts to The Brain Tumour Charity.

Miss Young's father, Stuart, 49, a former military serviceman, was diagnosed with a brain tumour three years ago, and is now unable to complete tasks on his own, and "won't get to see his children grow up or be there for the milestones of one's life".

Brain tumours reduce life expectancy on average by 27 years – more than any other cancer – and survival rates after five years are at a mere 12 per cent.

Yet funding and research into brain tumours in the UK receive just three per cent of annual cancer research spending.

The cycle challenge, which will start on Tuesday, September 3 before concluding on Sunday, September 15, aims to raise funds and awareness for the fight against brain tumours.

This will support the charity's goal to double survival rates and halve the impact of the disease on quality of life in the UK.

Born and raised in Stourbridge area, Mr Pemberton, a technician with WMAS and Miss Young, currently a student paramedic, hope their adventure will inspire their community to show support.

Miss Young said: "A cycling challenge such as this seems a very fitting way to support and demonstrate the values my father has installed in his children, and I know he would approve of an adventure of this kind for such a good cause.

"We aim to raise money and awareness for the charity so that other families affected by this in the future may hopefully be able to be with their loved ones for longer."

She added: "Between now and September 2024 I aim to raise as much as I can for this charity to try and make a difference.

"I hope to make dad proud."
