I USED to vote Liberal Democrat. Then along came Nick (no rise in student fees) Clegg and Ed Davey’s involvement in the Horizon scandal, or rather his non-involvement.

Still, it was sad to see Dan Powell, Herefordshire Lib Dem leader, falling for the idea of a bypass (We all need a bypass, April 18).

A bypass is a simple solution to a complex problem and these never work, like advocating dredging to solve river flooding, which just rushes the water down to the poor devils downstream. Studies from all over the world show that bypasses increase traffic volumes.

Unfortunately, I have had to travel to Worcestershire Royal Infirmary on a regular basis over the last few years and the Worcester bypass is an absolute nightmare. It’s better now as they have had to widen the road, at great cost, to cope with the extra traffic. But given the number of houses that are having to be built to pay for that road, it can only be a matter of time before the gridlock returns.

Hereford will face at least 10 years of chaos while a bypass is being built, with budgets flying out of control.

It would be cheaper and simpler to bring in school buses and a park-and-ride.
