RELIEVED Dudley Kingswinford coach Neil Shillingford will refuse to dwell for long on Saturday’s dramatic late 36-33 win over Whitchurch.

Only Gareth Bown’s stoppage time penalty preserved DK’s perfect record after Whitchurch came closer than anyone to toppling the Heathbrook outfit.

But Shillingford wants to avoid over-analysing the display and believes it is best his side begin to concentrate on this weekend’s visit of Old Laurentians.

He pointed out Saturday had actually been a very good day after closest rivals Sutton Coldfield dropped a point at Stratford, meaning DK now lead Midlands One West by nine points.

He said: “I think sometimes you can look too deeply into these things.

“It was a bad day at the office but the important thing is we got the win, I think when you look at even the great sides there are moments in the season when they nearly get beaten.

“At the end of the season if we win the league Saturday will be forgotten because we got everything we needed from the game and Sutton dropped points.

“I think it’s best to park it and move on.”

Whitchurch’s young and lively side punished an error strewn DK performance time and again as the home side struggled to maintain a stranglehold on the game.

Centre Stefan Shillingford saw two passes intercepted and returned for tries while Danny Nicholas was just wide with a late penalty which might have won it for the visitors.

Shillingford added: “It was a strange game. We started off ok and seemed to be in control most of the time but we did our best to gift them a few scores.

“Fair play to Whitchurch, they never give up and they have some good young lads.

“It was a little bit of a scare but it keeps it interesting doesn’t it?”
