IF there is one thing you should try and do this week, make sure a trip to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to watch The Rise and Little Fall of Little Voice is top of the list.

Made famous by the 90’s film starring Jane Horracks, Jim Cartwright’s production of Little Voice tells the tale of a mousey northern girl who spends her time locked away listening to the records of Sixties pop divas, left to her by her late father, while her boozy mother, Mari gets up to all sorts.

Following one such dalliance, Mari brings home club talent scout, Ray Say, who discovers LV’s talent of mimicking the singers and vows to get her on the stage, no matter what.

Featuring an all-star cast, the show is headed by Coronation Street’s Beverley Callard, who is remarkable as Little Voice’s tarty mum.

On-stage for the majority of the show, Callard provides some real laugh-out loud moments, especially with side-kick Sally Plumb, as friend Sadie and gives a standout performance in a wonderful scene between Mari and LV towards the end of the play.

Joe McGann is great as Ray Say, slowly building up the unpleasantness of the character throughout the show while West End star, Ray Quinn gives a loveable and heartwarming performance as LV’s only friend, Billy.

However the star of the show is definitely Jess Robinson who provides a heart wrenching portrayal of Little Voice and dazzles with a stunning vocal performance impersonating a host of divas, in a superb glittering dress – willed on by every member of the audience who are swept up in the plot.

A terrific show, which runs until Saturday.
