Hundreds of fans turned up at a Cradley park to help celebrate an amateur football team’s 120th birthday.

Crowds flocked to Homer Hill Park last night to witness Two Gates FC take on top borough side Halesowen Town.

Despite a brave effort from the Kidderminster League side the class of their opponents proved too much, as first-half goals from Dino Melitas, Alex Cowley and Mark Danks saw the Yeltz run out 4-0 winners.

The match was the centrepiece of a special event organised by the Friends of Homer Hill Park to raise cash for the venue. Other entertainment included a pre-match crossbar challenge featuring youth side Halas Hawks and music from hospital radio.

Ward councillor Richard Body, the chairman of the Friends group, said he was very pleased with how the evening had gone.

Richard said: “I think it has been excellent. I don’t know how much we have raised at the moment but it has gone really well.

“It’s been great to see local people come together on the park and enjoy themselves.”

“Considering the difference on paper between the two sides Two Gates played really well.”

Two Gates saw their ranks bolstered by a guest appearance from ex-West Brom striker “Super” Bob Taylor, while the Yeltz squad saw a cameo performance from Halesowen News sport editor Greg Shelton.

Speaking after the game Bob praised the efforts of his team-mates and supporters.

He said: “The lads have done really well and worked really hard. It was an enjoyable game to take part in - played in the right spirit with great support from the crowd.

“It’s nice to see a community pulling together in one direction and supporting events like this.”

Visitors were also able to take free health tests and get lifestyle advice courtesy of the Black Country Cardiovascular Network who were pioneering a new scheme.

Network manager Carol Reilly said she was pleased by the response to the tests, which included checks on blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Carol said: “More than 60 people have come for advice which is great.

“It is important people take their health seriously and gain knowledge of how best to take action against cardiovascular disease.”
