WEST Midlands LibDem MEP Liz Lynne will visit the High Acres Base Station in Kingswinford on Friday, January 30 to see first hand the home of eight different phone masts that have been found by OFCOM to give the highest levels of electromagnetic radiation in England.

Since the masts, which were dubbed "the worst levels of this type of radiation in the world" by American scientist Dr George Carlo, were erected in 2001, 14 people who lived nearby have died of cancer and a further 20 people in the area have contracted the disease and survived.

Electromagnetic radiation is given off by mobile phones, wi-fi internet and phone masts. Although this type of non-ionizing radiation has in the past been considered safe, some recent studies have suggested the radiation may have a damaging effect on human health.

Liz, who is co-chairman of MEPs Against Cancer in the European Parliament, will be visiting the site with a group of residents who are campaigning for the masts to be removed. They will be joined by Eileen O’Connor from the Radiation Research Trust, a group committed to further exploring the potential effects of electromagnetic radiation and by Professor Olle Johanson, one of the world's leading authorities on electromagnetic radiation from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute.
