WEST Midlands Labour MEP Neena Gill has spoken out in the European Parliament on the need for clearer legislation on mental health.

It is estimated a quarter of Europe’s population experience some form of mental health problems during their lifetime and Neena has urged MEPs to take action.

In a speech to Parliament, Neena said: “We urgently need up-to-date mental health legislation which can properly develop an awareness of the importance of good mental health.”

Speaking following her address, Neena explained her stance: “We can no longer afford to let mental health issues remain the dark secrets of families and individuals in the West Midlands and across Europe.

"The impact these problems, which are often entirely treatable, has on families across our region is enormous.”

Neena asked the Parliament to consider a new approach to mental health problems which would make the most of awareness-raising on the internet, on television and in schools and workplaces.

Speaking from her Brussels office, Neena said: “European money must be made available for this.

"It is only through getting out there and telling people about mental health issues that we can confront the stigmas and take a mature approach to tackling this problem.

“For too long too many people have suffered these illnesses in silence. Now is the time for the European Parliament to take strong and meaningful action on this issue.”
