REGARDLESS of today’s local election outcome, there was always going to be a different councillor selected in Amblecote.

Dudley Council stalwart and former mayor Patricia Martin has stepped down from her role as a Conservative councillor after 15 years in the role.

Mrs Martin said: “My husband died 18 months ago and I had a severe accident where I broke my knee cap. I also had a double cataract operation.

“I’ve recently had the chance to think if I can still do my best for my constituents, but with my health, as well as my age, I thought it would be time to step aside.”

Originally from London before moving to the Black Country in the early 90s, Mrs Martin said she never intended to get into local politics.

“I started out delivering leaflets in Bedford and wasn’t going to stand,” she said. “But the Conservative candidate ‘vanished’ so I was put in as their replacement as a paper vote and I won in a landslide!

“Becoming Mayor of Dudley was something I never expected, as coming from London I’m a ‘foreigner’, but the support I received was wonderful.

“I have always enjoyed helping people and my 15 years on the council has allowed me to do that. I have met so many wonderful people and it has really been a privilege.

“I must say I have enjoyed every single minute of it.”

After ‘retiring’ from politics, Mrs Martin - who is in her 70s - will continue in her roles as chairman of Amblecote History Society and governor of Amblecote Primary School.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley's Conservative Group, praised Mrs Martin for her time as both a Tory member and mayor.

He said: “Pat is a typical old-school councillor who always put her constituents first.

“She was always seen around the ward handing out the newsletter she published herself, which only focused on the issues concerning the people of Amblecote.

“She was there when residents needed to contact her and she gave her best for them.

“She will be missed on the council - not just by the conservative group but by councillors from all parties, as she is a wonderful character and was a much loved mayor.”

One of Sikandar Ahmed (Labour), Christian Kiever (Green), Pete Lee (UKIP) or Simon Tyler (Conservative) will replace Mrs Martin in the Amblecote ward.
