The May meeting of the Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club was held at the Kingfisher Hotel, Wallheath when 42 members enjoyed an excellent threecourse lunch.

Chairman Jean Corns was welcomed back following her recent hip operation but Vice Chairman Mary Jones once again did an excellent job conducting the proceedings.

The speaker was Kate Cadman who had the grand title of Curatorial Officer and Senior Demonstrator at the Coalport China Museum.

She warned members that they must stay alert and not fall asleep as she would be passing round all the items she had brought to show us.

There were large earthenware jugs, fine bone china and delicate porcelain cups and bowls.

It was 1,000 years ago that great changes took place in China when they discovered another type of clay, one of the first pieces being bought by Henry VIII.

From 1770 onwards porcelain was produced in Shropshire and we saw old favourites like the Willow Pattern and Indian Tree.

The process was very labour intensive and everyone had their own job, eg only the men did the printing, then there was the cutter out, the placer, the rubber on and the washer off, working 12 hours a day 6 days a week for 12/6d.

But of course today with digital printing and all colours being applied at the same time everyone can afford to buy china.] The next luncheon is on the 10th June with Pat Bickford from Moseley Old Hall on Tudor Medicines, and on 8th July not to be missed is Elli Targett with the inspiring story of her father's escape from the Germans following his work with the Norwegian Resistance.

Our coach outing on June 15 is to Evesham Country Park and Broadway.

Visitors will receive a warm welcome - ring the Secretary for more information on 01902 372984.
