THE Kingswinford School is helping its local primary school students to become not just scientists – but space scientists.

More than 130 pupils from St Mary’s CE, Dawley Brook, Church of the Ascension and Blanford Mere primary schools were recently given the opportunity to take part in the Water Street school’s ‘Mission X – Train like an Astronaut’ programme.

The international initiative uses space exploration to challenge, inspire and educate children to set physical fitness and science goals, practice physical fitness activities and explore healthy nutrition.

Anna Pinto, director of science specialism, said: “The best part of the initiative was the excitement created by the launch of the project.

“Children had a passionate interest. Many had wonderful stories and experiences to share and absolutely loved the cross phase teaching with year 10 Sports Leaders and Science Ambassadors.

“It was also a fantastic experience for our older students, increasing their self-confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills. There was a genuine ‘buzz’ every week.

“The event was a great success, fun was had by all and we now have 138 new apprentice astronauts/space scientists in the local vicinity.”

Guest speaker Mike Wood MP, who was joined by Kingswinford councillors Patrick Harley, Nicola Richards and governor/director Kate Kendall, gave the audience an insight into the importance of the Mission X programme.

All 138 primary school pupils received certificates and prizes for completing the 16 missions necessary to finish the course.
