BUSINESS-minded schoolchildren in Stourbridge ran a successful cafe for one night only.

Pupils at St Josephs Catholic School in Norton prepared and served baguettes, crisps and a variety of desserts to hungry guests on Monday afternoon.

Teacher Simon Kettle said the venture was part of a financial capability project and added: “We did it with the year six pupils after they finished their SATS. They put together an idea for a business, thinking about profitability.

“We decided to run a cafe and started to think about how much it would cost to make the meals and what we would have to sell them for to make a profit.”

Mr Kettle said the event was “very successful” as 120 diners arrived leading to a £250 profit, which will be spent on a cinema outing for the children.

He continued: “Children felt it was hard work but they really enjoyed it. They had so much enthusiasm and had a real insight into what it would be like to work in a cafe.

“We split the class up and had half the children waiting on tables, who had experience with customer service and taking orders and the other hald were chefs, dealing with kitchen hygine and working under pressure.

“It is definitely something we would consider doing again in the future.”
