A DAY dedicated to Morris dancing will get visitors to Stourbridge town centre toe-tapping and stick-wielding.

Hosted by the town’s Bedcote Morris Dancers, the inaugural Stourbridge Day of Dance on Saturday, May 16, will feature performances from dancers from across the Midlands.

As well as traditional Cotswold Morris, there will be displays of Border Morris, North-West clog, Appalachian step, tribal belly dancing and step clogging.

Members of Bedcote Morris, who will be strutting their stuff throughout the day, said the day will bring a variety of traditional dance styles to a new audience.

Elaine Jones, squire of Bedcote Morris, said: “We spend most weekends throughout the summer travelling to perform in dance and folk festivals.

“So it’s a real pleasure to be hosting a ‘home fixture’ in Stourbridge and inviting so many of our dancing friends to enjoy a day in the town.

“Three of the sides – Bedcote, Castle Clog and Itchy Feet Appalachian – are based in Stourbridge and others are coming from Birmingham, Shropshire and Worcestershire.

“It promises to be a great day of free entertainment and a chance to show Stourbridge what traditional dance is all about.

“We intend this to become an annual event and an important date in the dance calendar.”

Performances will take place from 11am in Foster Street and under the town clock at the top of Lower High Street.
