VOLUNTARY Stourbridge counselling scheme The What? Centre has been named as a runner-up in a regional ‘outstanding citizens’ prize.

Providing one-to-one therapeutic counselling and advice services across the borough, the centre's chief officer, Julie Duffy, said she was thrilled that her staff were recognised by the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner awards.

However, the group lost out in the ‘outstanding community project’ category to Solihull non-contact youth club Box Clever when the winners were announced at a recent ceremony.

West Midlands PCC David Jamieson called the ceremony a “truly inspirational evening” which he attended with his two assistants, Ashley Bertie and Dudley Councillor Judy Foster.

Mr Jamieson said: “There is no word for these people other than ‘heroes’. It was wonderful to meet to all the nominees and winners and hear about their miraculous stories of bravery, selflessness and triumph over adversity.

“I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations and thanks to all the nominees and winners – they are a true credit to the West Midlands.”

The Coventry Street-based centre has been helping young people overcome issues such as addiction, eating disorders and sexual abuse for the past 31 years, and is proving so successful that there is currently a waiting list of more than 100 people.
