Stourbridge Chess Club

Stourbridge played at Mercia on Monday night in a re-arranged Dudley division 2 match. Martin Berridge, Jeremy Humphries and Chris Cox all won with Tony Shaw drawing on board 1 to give Stourbridge us a convincing 3½ - ½ win.

On Wednesday a surprisingly strong Halesowen visited for a Birmingham Division 2 match which Stourbridge needed to win. All 6 boards were very evenly matched. After the first hour, it looked like Stourbridge were ahead on most boards. First to finish were Julie Wilson and Greg Dyett both of whom accepted draw offers.

John Foxall then won with a back row mate so Stourbridge were ahead 2-1. This was followed by two more draws for Dave Scriven and Eric Horwill to bring the score 3-2 to Stourbridge. This just left board 4 playing with Stourbridge requiring a draw to win the match. The Stourbridge player was a piece up but faced a tremendous attack against his exposed king. Paul Sharratt defended well but was unable to contain the multiple threats and eventually lost to make it a drawn match.

This still leaves Stoubridge in the relegation zone and needing to win at least one of their last 2 matches.
