Stourbridge Ladies Society

Members and visitors were welcomed by the chairman Mildred Hall. Prior to introducing the Speaker, members were reminded that the July meeting is to be the Summer Party and to arrive no earlier than 1.45pm. The social secretary, Doreen Cooke, then requested payment for the July outing to The Hop Pocket and advised that there were still seats available on the coach. Friends would be welcome. Names needed to be put down for the September outing to Worcester with payment in July as there is no August meeting.

Ed Shore was then introduced and welcomed as our June speaker. His talk entitled “Taking a caravan to India” began with a brief introduction about himself and how he came to be taking his car and caravan to India. Apparently, as a young man he trained as a Plasterer but following his Army service was unable to settle down. He packed a rucksack and went travelling for seven and a half years. Once a month he sent a postcard to his mother. This gave him a love of India and following his marriage he took his wife, car and caravan overland to India taking nine months. Ed’s talk was illustrated with slides of this journey through Europe and into Asia. They travelled through vast desert regions, often with no camp sites once they left Turkey. However the people they met showed great kindness to them especially when problems arose. After touring India the caravan had to be scrapped but the car was shipped back to England. He still has this car, a Grenada, which is now 27years old. He told us that the repairs done at the road side in India are still working. Ed was then thanked for this interesting and humorous talk. The raffle was then drawn and the meeting finished following tea and biscuits.

There are meetings on the fourth Tuesday in the month in the Amblecote Room at Stourbridge Town Hall starting at 2pm. Visitors welcome.
