WOLLASTON gardeners are inviting the public to get involved with the local community and see what can be grown on Stourbridge soil at an annual show.

The free Wollaston Gardeners' Guild show will take place at St James’s Church Hall on Saturday, September 3, from 2.15pm.

Throughout the show, a number of flowers and produce will be exhibited, with more than 60 classes which the guild’s members can enter.

These include classes of vegetables, fruit, flowers, jams, chutneys, cakes and even photography, while children can take part in classes just for them, which has already seen entries from St James’ Primary School pupils.

Following the show's opening by guild president Eric Southall, the public will be able to view the exhibits before getting the chance to bid for them in an auction lead by guild chairman Adam Greathead at 3pm.

Adam, 26, said: “We often see impressive leeks, and the heaviest onion class always creates a lot of interest.

“It’s the optimum chance to purchase fresh locally grown food, grown within only a few miles of the show’s venue.

“And the flowers I auction off will make a wonderful display in a vase for up to a week or more when freshly picked from the garden!”

During the show, members of the guild will also be available to answer any questions visitors may have, while Adam – head gardener for Ashwood Nurseries owner John Massey – is inviting the public to bring questions with them when they attend the event.

The guild is also celebrating after raising more than £1,500 for local charity Dudley Mind after a number of members opened up their gardens to the public this summer.

Adam added: “After such a successful summer of members opening their gardens to the public, we feel Wollaston Gardeners Guild is growing into a thriving club and I’m very pleased to say we have welcomed quite a few new members since my chairmanship began.”

The guild meet every third Monday of the month at Stourbridge Institute from 7.30pm, featuring talks from different speakers.
