PEOPLE give up smoking in October or alcohol in January, but this young lad is giving up all his gadgets throughout February to raise money for Cancer Research.

Just like most 11 year-old boys, Alex Cole enjoys playing on his PlayStation console, Kindle, mobile phone, laptop and Nintendo DS but will give them all up to raise money for the charity after seeing its appeal for help on television.

Alex, of Bromyard Road, St Johns, said: "It's scary to think I won't have any of these to play on, but I want to raise money for charity so I'm not too worried.

"I will miss my Kindle the most because I like playing games on it and reading too.

"Everyone at school has been nice and have filled out sponsorship forms for me.

"I think I will practice on my guitar more in February as I would like to be good on that."

Khamala Randall, Alex's mother, says she is proud of her son's sacrifice.

Mrs Randall, who also has a daughter and another son, both younger than Alex, said: "Ever since we saw Cancer Research's advert, he has wanted to do something and came up with this idea.

"I think he is looking forward to it. Not a lot of children would do something like this, especially as his laptop and mobile phone were Christmas presents.

"Without his gadgets I think he will spend more time on his guitar, but he's also said to me he wants to do more writing and read more books too, which is great. I'd like it if that carried on after February too.

"It would be nice if his brother and sister follow his example, but they'll probably spend more time teasing him with their gadgets than anything.

"In all seriousness, I am very proud of him for wanting to do something like this and I'm sure he'll do well."

Alex, who attends St Clement's Primary School, is aiming to raise £100 for his efforts.
