A WEEPING mother told a jury some of the last words she spoke to her 19-year-old son before he was murdered on Hartlebury Common.

Eileen Price said Shane was very quiet as they drove to a car park to settle a dispute with the Carpenter family.

He denied being scared and she said to him: "The most he can do is black your eye or break your nose. He can't kill you."

Minutes later, teenager Joe Carpenter knifed Shane Price through the heart after chasing him, Worcester Crown Court was told.

Mrs Price, aged 42, and her husband Frederick senior, 47, sustained serious wounds during the encounter last February 13.

Joe Carpenter, 19, of Park Crescent, Stourport-on-Severn, has admittedmurder and wounding Mrs Price. On trial are his parents.

Car dealer Paul Carpenter, 55, and Tracy Carpenter, 46, both of Park Crescent, deny murder and wounding.

The husband told police the victim was "the aggressor" and claimed he was hit on the head with a baton.

His wife alleged Mrs Price had a knife and her husband a butcher's cleaver.

But prosecutor Tim Raggatt QC said their accounts were fiction, designed to help their son.

He told the jury that a knife and two machetes were brought to the scene by the Carpenters.

Joe Carpenter stabbed Mrs Price as Tracy Carpenter held her and Paul Carpenter slashed Frederick Price with one of the machetes, he alleged.

Giving evidence yesterday (Tuesday) , Mrs Price, of Broach Road, Stourport, said the teenagers had grown up together but an "atmosphere" developed after Shane began going out with a 17-year-old girl, who was fostered by the accused couple.

Joe thought the relationship was being conducted behind his parents' backs.

There was a further row over a family friend, and Mrs Price claimed Tracy warned in a phone call that Shane "was going to have it".

"Tracy said Joe was going to kill him. I told her I would scram (correct) her face off, that when she looked in the mirror she would have Joe to thank for all the trouble he's causing."

Mrs Price said she wanted to sort out the row by the families getting together and talking.

But she also feared a "fair-play fight" not inolving weapons might take place.

She and Tracy Carpenter decided the families should meet at the Wilden Top car park.

She recalled Joe was "bouncing" by his car before Tracy ran at her and grabbed her hair.

During a fight between the two women, Mrs Price heard the teenagers shouting. "Joe shouted you've got to have it, I'm going to kill you," she said.

She tried to break free to "sort the boys out" but Tracy wouldn't let her go.

"I was scared of Shane being hurt. At the other end of the car park I saw Shane running but he tripped and fell. I thought Joe was punching him."

But her elder son Frederick junior, also at the scene, screamed at her: "He's not punching him, he's got a knife."

Mrs Price added: "I said please Tracy, you get Joe and I'll get Shane. I was begging her. I said Joe's got a knife, you know he's got a knife."

The Carpenters left the scene in their Saab and were arrested around 10pm the same night.

The trial continues.
