I WOULD like to express a positive viewpoint regarding Stourbridge Library.

No doubt there arepolitical, council management and budgetary issues at present, but I hope to counterbalance some statements which may appear (possibly inadvertantly and, I believe, unfairly) to criticise staff involved there over the last decade or more.

I have used the Stourbridge Library for well over two decades and for all that time it has been an oasis of calm, appearing to be very well run, with extremely pleasant and helpful staff - a library as a library is supposed to be in fact.

Despite the reported book clearouts, I've always been able to find a good selection of interesting, sufficiently up-to-date books when needed (I have eight wide ranging non-fiction titles out on loan right now and all are currently available in bookshops). I've made regular use of the other facilities, which are provided in a consistently well-disciplined and peaceful environment.

Just over a couple of years ago I witnessed an unexpected spot of bother in there one evening.

Two of the staff acted swiftly, effectively and intrepidly (one was slightly hurt) to resolve the situation.

The way it was dealt with was very impressive. Soon everything was back to normal as if nothing had happened.

From my experience over time, I have found it to be as good as a library can be expected to be - in fact better.

As a user, I greatly appreciate the staff, past and present, who have worked there over recent decades, who I think have done an excellent job.
