WOLLASTON schoolchildren studying Black Country history have ended up making a little history of their own after they were invited to name a new housing development.

Children at The Ridge in Gregory Road were invited by developers Taylor Wimpey to come up with possible names for their new canal-side development off Wollaston High Street.

Headteacher Deb Hudson said: “Our year four class were looking at the history of our area so to be involved in naming the new estate was very relevant to the work the children were doing. They came up with some fantastic ideas.”

As a result of suggestions made by pupils Owen Staves, Katie Potter and Amelia Higgins - the name Doulton Brook was eventually chosen to reflect the development’s location next to the Ruskin Glass Centre (formerly the Royal Doulton factory) in the Glass Quarter.

Mrs Hudson added: “We were delighted to hear Doulton Brook had been chosen.

“We are very proud that from studying history, the children at The Ridge have been making history.”

The new housing estate will comprise a mix of two bedroom apartments and three and four-bedroom houses - and will be completed in three-and-a-half years.
