NEWLY promoted Thorns A caused an upset by drawing 5-5 with champions Jim’s Gym, in the opening round of the Dudley and District Table Tennis League.
Elsewhere, Steve Hammond was unbeaten for Bromley A in their 6-4 win against Lees.
Sandwell Unison drew 5-5 with Thimblemill A, Unison’s Brian Morris and Sid Parker winning two each and Dave Hiley and Tim Walters doing likewise for Thimblemill. Hanbury Hill set the early pace with a 7-3 win at Woodsetton Steels A, with Brian Kelly unbeaten.
In Division Two Woodside Liberals beat Thimblemill B 6-4 despite a treble from Thimblemill’s Dave Smith.
Matt Phillips was unbeaten for Woodsetton Steels B but could not prevent a comfortable 7-3 away win for Bromley C.
Bromley E triumphed 6-4 over their B team thanks to a treble form Peter Canavan, while Bromley D hammered the youngsters of Thorns B 10-0. Peter Beech, Dave Harbourne and John Denley winning all their games.
