Newcastle (Staffs) RUFC U14’s Rugby team took home the county cup at the end of this rugby season in an exciting final against Tamworth RUFC.

Conditions were horrendous as torrential rain beat down on an already soaking pitch, making a fast-paced game unlikely and a tough challenge ahead for the forwards.

Newcastle took an early lead with a try by Tyrece Ward but a missed conversion putting the score at 5:0, this early lead was reinforced by a second try by Dan Rakovs but another missed conversion. Shortly after, Newcastle were reduced to 14 men due to a yellow card for a late tackle. Tamworth then responded with an unconverted try in the corner followed by a converted try just before half time. The score at the break now put Tamworth 12 Newcastle 10.

Newcastle came back fighting and totalled another 24 points with scores by Ollie Reseigh, CJ Awunor, Dan Rakovs and Joshua Clowes brought the scoring to a close with a textbook training ground move from the 5m line out. The final score was Newcastle 34 and Tamworth 12. In conclusion a fantastic display of rugby with two excellent teams going toe to toe for the full match.

The head coach Mark Lewins quoted “we are both immensely proud of the way this team has come together, they work hard each week and deserve every commendation for their tireless efforts” exhibiting true pride of the team.

Overall, a good-natured game played in the true spirit of rugby and after the cup presentation there was much celebration to be done for the undefeated U14’s.
