Hospital Saturday Fund supports Hospice

Stourbridge News: Hospital Saturday Fund supports Hospice

8:08am Tuesday 3rd June 2014

The Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge has received a very generous donation from the Hospital Saturday Fund towards the purchase of new privacy screens to be used in the inpatient unit. The Mary Stevens Hospice provides palliative care, symptom control and therapy for people living with life limiting illnesses as well as providing dedicated support for their families and carers. Due to the sensitive nature of their care, maintaining the privacy and dignity of their patients stands at the core of the hospice’s mission. The Hospital Saturday fund, who support medical charities, hospices and hospitals across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, were approached by the hospice in October last year. John Randel, Hospital Saturday Fund Trustee, visited the hospice to present the cheque for £4638, taking the opportunity to meet with Stevan Jackson, the hospice’s CEO, and view the enhancements currently being made to the impatient unit which are on target to be completed in the next few months. Stevan Jackson, CEO at the Mary Stevens Hospice said, “The Mary Stevens Hospice is extremely delighted to receive this generous donation that will help significantly in improving patient privacy and preserving dignity, two fundamentals of hospice care.” John Randel agreed about the importance of maintaining patient dignity in hospice care and said “The Hospital Saturday Fund supports worthy charities throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland are very pleased to support the work of The Mary Stevens Hospice.”

Where there's a will...

Stourbridge News: Needs you!

9:00am Tuesday 29th April 2014

Mary Stevens Hospice is joining forces with a local legal firm to offer a convenient way of making a will. Here at Mary Stevens Hospice we have designated May as Wills Month and have partnered with West Midlands solicitors Benson-Williams to offer reduced price will-writing. People contacting the law firm via Mary Stevens Hospice will be able to have a standard will written for £60 and Benson-Williams will give half of that fee to the Hospice, helping Mary Stevens to provide care and support to patients, their families and carers. Benson-Williams director Jim Stanistreet says: “Our aim here is to make writing a will easy and at a discount for the client. We will go out to them, at a time that is convenient for them, whether that be a weekend or an evening. “And half of the fee they are paying will be a donation to Mary Stevens Hospice so they are raising money for a good cause at the same time.” Hospice Day Therapies lead Ruth Davies says many families prefer not to think of the future – but that can mean their wishes won’t be met. “People tend to veer away from making a will because it may be tempting fate, but it can relieve a lot of tension and worry when they do. Knowing that they have made their wishes known and prepared for the future can give a sense of peace.” Ruth, whose role involves supporting families to access a range of services, feels making a will can be part of preparing for end of life and, by making wishes known; it can be supportive for loved ones left behind. If you would like to take advantage of Mary Stevens Hospice Wills Month please contact the Fundraising Team on 01384 377778 or email info@mshfundraising.co.uk

Mary Stevens Hospice annual ‘Shorts & Shades’

8:31am Tuesday 18th June 2013

We might be fed up with the showery weather, but the Fundraising Team at Mary Stevens Hospice are urging local schools, business and community members to bring summer into their lives by joining in with  ‘Shorts and Shades’ Day on, Friday 21st June. Day therapies patients at the Hospice are getting into the spirit of this by taking part every day this week, we have a sandpit set up in our conservatory and patients are enjoying a real seaside theme with fish n’  chip lunches and a traditional ice-cream van from Midlands Super Cream kindly coming along to serve dessert. Vicki Rowles, Head of Fundraising at the Hospice said, “It is fabulous that our Day therapies patients are joining in and have a fun time with this. Most companies have occasional dress down Fridays to support a charity and it would be great to have the support of hundreds of businesses around Dudley Borough for this special Hospice Day, with their staff donating just £1 to wear their summer gear to work. Schools can also get on board by holding a ‘Shorts and Shades’ or ‘Shorts and Caps’ Mufti Day and letters have gone out to over 100 schools inviting them to participate”.  Vicki added, “It would be great to receive photographs so that we could create a gallery for our website”.
